There is no place in New Zealand like the West Coast of the South Island
Deemed to be the most untouched scenic region within the South Island, with its unique towns and friendly people, dense virgin rain forest, helicopter around Mt Cook with a snow landing in the Southern Alps near their ice glaciers. The area is steep in history of past gold and coal mining, forestry and timber production.
Since the scaling down of gold mining, coal mining and native sawn timber production tourism became the area's growth industry and is expanding tenfold. Each of West Coast towns that we visit has number of scenic and historic attractions ranging from the must see replica 'Shanty' town of by-gone years, a picturesque river gorge or a 'tree top walkway' amongst the high canopy of a New Zealand native rain forest.
A visit to the South Island of New Zealand without including the sights and hospitality of the West Coast would be incomplete.
A multi-day tour to include travelling the scenic West Coast region of the South Island is a must. The West Coast region may be added to our Marlborough and Tasman region tour as part of a South Island multi-day tour.
