Nearby the Arthurs Pass village is the engineering achievement of a roadway viaduct that ensures safe road access to the magnificent West Coast area of the South Island. This area is home to the world famous 'Coast to Coast' sporting marathon event that involves the entrants in traversing mountain passes on foot, river kayaking and cycling, all from a beach on the West Coast, to a beach on the East Coast all in one day! One has to see the area and its terrain to put the entrant's level of endurance into true perspective.
The area is home to the famous TransAlpine passenger train service, the rail trip being rated as one of the world's top ten train journeys. The passenger train runs daily between Christchurch, and the town of Greymouth that is situated on the West Coast of the South Island.
Should one wish, with an early transfer to the Christchurch railway station, your Southern Alps day tour is able to include travelling a section of the journey on the TransAlpine passenger train, thus enabling one to experience the alternative of the railway route's breath taking views and scenery.
On the completion of the rail section of your tour, you would be met by your driver/guide at the Arthurs Pass Village railway station for the return trip to Christchurch by road.
